A Therapeutic Process
Focusing is a powerful, evidence-based therapeutic process that grew out of extensive research conducted in the 1950s and 60s by Eugene Gendlin and Carl Rogers.
Their research showed that clients who were most ‘successful’ in therapy were those who connected to an ‘inner felt sense’ in their bodies which related to a situation in their life.
They then carefully symbolised it and expressed it to their counsellor, who provided a non-judgemental, accepting environment for them to patiently explore what was there.

Inner Felt Sense
Current research and evidence corroborate the therapeutic efficacy of connecting with the bodily felt sense of a situation – and this research has been instrumental in IAPT’s CfD (Counselling for Depression) being offered as an alternative to CBT as an evidence-based treatment.
Focusing was developed as a means of enabling anyone to be able to connect with an ‘inner felt sense’ in their bodies that related to a situation in their life, and to experience the therapeutic gains of doing so.
Heading
Focusing has elements in common with mindfulness, but goes further in that it’s proactive in connecting with, and spending time with, inner feelings and what these feelings are communicating and what they need.
Unlike mindfulness Focusing is commonly practised in pairs, whether peer to peer or therapist to client, or pastoral support worker to pupil. Focusing can also be practised alone as a self-help tool, or in groups and therapeutic relationships. It is very flexible.
Anyone Can Learn It
The real beauty of Focusing is that anyone can learn it, and once learnt, they can use it to help other people.
It’s not only for those with a therapy room - if you’re working in the field of mental health and emotional wellbeing, whether it’s with adults or children, you can facilitate it – and you’ll find it a very flexible and cost-effective intervention method.
